Yay me! It was the first Super Bowl I didn’t have the urge to vacuum. I usually spend Super Bowl Sunday vacuuming to drown out the screaming fans. Not this time. I watched the entire game. Even though I made unsophisticated football comments I actually enjoyed myself.
Sitting through three hours of football is a HUGE accomplishment for someone who isn’t particularly interested in sports. In fact, if I were a guy I probably wouldn’t watch any sports on television. I’d prefer to be outdoors playing sports instead of watching others make millions from the sidelines. When it comes to the Super Bowl, however, the least suspecting person can get sucked into the hype. I wasn’t the only one at the grocery store stock piling on chips and guacamole.
Male or female, sports fan or not, there’s no contesting the appeal of the Super Bowl. If there’s one thing I learned, it’s that the biggest game day of the year isn’t just about football. It’s about the commercials. For some, it’s about the halftime show. Fortunately, Beyonce showed us that she can dance as well as sing live. Watching the reporters trying to figure out what to say during the power outage was just as entertaining. I personally can’t get enough of the Doritos commercials. The commercial where dad and his friends get lured into playing dress up by a bag of Doritos was my favorite.
What I relished the most was sitting arm in arm with my guy rooting for his team to win. The truth is, while I cannot recount every play or necessarily distinguish between first and fourth down, my motivation for watching the game was simple. I wanted to make Renaissance Man HAPPY. I dug watching the 49ers play the Ravens because he dug it. I love being his number one fan. I also love the fact that football speaks to him and because yesterday’s game was oozing with emotion, I couldn’t help but love football too.
It didn’t matter that San Francisco lost or my floors were littered with dirt because I scored major points with my guy.
What was your favorite Super Bowl moment? Or did you sleep through the entire game? If so, then how about your favorite DORITOS flavor. Cool Ranch or Nacho Cheese?

This soooo resonates with me! We had a party to go to and then the guy hosting it got that flu that is going around and canceled. I was not glad about him being sick, but I have to admit I was kind of pleased that I didn’t have to go but then my husband changed plans. He was going down to his parents. His dad has been being treated for cancer and I think that it was a good change of plans. I made my crab dip and he kept saying “This is such a good day!” And he was happy with me just being there and visiting with his mom. But I am impressed! You actually sat through the whole game?! You are an inspiration to us all! lol.
Posted by coastalmom | February 4, 2013, 6:23 amI’m glad that you decided to stand by your man and pay a visit to his father. Your guy was probably so thankful to have you by his side. The yummy crab dip probably scored you some points too! As for me, yes, I watched the ENTIRE game. At first, it was slow going but by the end of the game, I was truly invested. Sadly, my team lost!
Posted by Anka | February 4, 2013, 8:56 amOh my gosh Anka… even though I have not a renaissance man at current, I totally relate from prior !! That is too funny, I really could care less about sports either. But, when you love someone, you just cant help getting caught up in what they love !! After all , and at the very least, it was entertaining, wasn’t it? ….
Posted by mistymidnite | February 4, 2013, 6:36 amOh Ellie, I could careless about sports too. But sometimes you just gotta give in to your man, right? You will meet your Renaissance Man one day and when you do, please let me know what sacrifices you’ve had to make. It could be something like eating sushi. Unless, of course, you love sushi!
Posted by Anka | February 4, 2013, 8:43 am
Posted by mistymidnite | February 4, 2013, 8:47 amI never liked sushi until my guy introduced it to me. Now, it’s one of my favorite things to do on a date night–eat sushi. I’m gathering you’re not a sushi fan?
Posted by Anka | February 4, 2013, 8:49 amSo that’s what you meant. Oh, Okay, em hum, yup, sure Im a sushi fan, …just nvr tried it ! Ha. Have a great week sweetie !
Posted by mistymidnite | February 4, 2013, 8:08 pmI’m going to keep commenting until it shows up
I think something is wrong with my account. Boooo!!
Posted by Crazy14 | February 4, 2013, 6:40 amWipe those tears! Your gravatar is looking as beautiful as ever my dear!
Posted by Anka | February 4, 2013, 8:38 amokay, I seem to have lost my Gravatar and everything else that identifies me, so that stinks. BUT my original comment was Cool Ranch every time AND I’m sure your man appreciated your Superbowl efforts
Posted by whencrazymeetsexhaustion | February 4, 2013, 6:59 amMy man was thrilled that I sat next to him the ENTIRE duration of the game. Except for potty breaks, of course! I’m surprised to learn that you’re a Cool Ranch girl. I am an original flavor Doritos girl till the end!
Posted by Anka | February 4, 2013, 8:40 amWe are so alike lol. I only watch the Super Bowl for commercials but yesterday I found myself tuned to the game though the only thing I understood was touchdown.
The Mr and I laughed so much at the Doritos commercial, they always have the best. The Audi one was pretty neat too…
Posted by boomiebol | February 4, 2013, 7:06 amYep, we’re definitely alike. The only I thing I understood through all the yelling and screaming was “touchdown” too. I also like the Doritos commercial with the goat, the one where he ate 156 bags of chips. Car commercials did seem to dominate the ads yesterday. Thanks for stopping by, Boomie!
Posted by Anka | February 4, 2013, 8:37 amWe’re Canadian, buts lots of people here love the Super Bowl too–so here’s my story. As we entered an almost totally empty sushi restaurant on Sunday night, my partner looked around at all the empty tables and said, “Oh, right. The football game. We chose a good night to go out.” To which my 10.5 y o son said, “What’s football?” And there, friend, in a nutshell, you have the role of professional sports in our lives. Even (gasp) hockey. We’re fitness/health/outdoors people… organized sport? Anyway. Kudos to you for making the sacrifice–one of your February love Valentines, right? <3
Posted by nothingbythebook | February 4, 2013, 7:31 amAt this point, I wouldn’t even explain American football to your son. The important thing is that he’s acquired a taste for sushi at such a young age. Thanks for the kudos, by the way! You’re so observant. This was absolutely an attempt to be romantic. Touchdown anyone?
Posted by Anka | February 4, 2013, 9:41 amI am elated to know you spent the game with hubby… and my most favorite moment was when at the end of the game, I had won $450.
Posted by Mustang.Koji | February 4, 2013, 8:30 amI can’t say that I’m happy the Ravens won. But, for your sake, I’m absolutely thrilled! Congrats on winning the bet!
Posted by Anka | February 4, 2013, 8:33 amAnka, this was one of the few Superbowls I’ve watched. Usually, I don’t watch it, but this one was actually really exciting! I like that same commercial. I actually watched it with my kids, while my husband played video games. Whatever! The Niners couldn’t pull it out, but I was hopeful throughout.
Posted by The Bumble Files | February 4, 2013, 9:14 amI can’t believe your hubby was playing video games. I take it he’s not a huge football fan. My favorite part of the game was probably the power outage. I can imagine what the Harbaughs’ family dinners would look like. “Uh, you only won because the power outage disrupted our team’s rhythm.” Hope your week is off to a good start, Amy!
Posted by Anka | February 5, 2013, 6:13 pmYou may have just found something that your man finds romantic! Being attentive to something that he enjoys just because he enjoys it!
I was cheering for SF as well, but alas, it was not meant to be. Next year maybe it’ll be the Bears
Posted by Gardengirl | February 4, 2013, 9:40 amBoth my husband and I would’ve preferred any other team over the Ravens. Let’s hope for the Bears next year. I should probably check to see if my guy likes that team. Wouldn’t want to be unromantic or anything!
Posted by Anka | February 5, 2013, 6:15 pm
Posted by Gardengirl | February 6, 2013, 4:33 amAs I told you earlier this morning, I’m not a huge football fan outside of the Packers but it is the Super Bowl after all! I missed the Doritos commercial! I’ll have to go see if I can find it on the internet! I loved the VW commercial with the guy talking in the Jamaican accent! I’m embarrassed to admit but it totally reminded me of something I would do!
Posted by motherhoodisanart | February 4, 2013, 10:14 amYa Man’ She would… Especially for da VW man…
Stoopid Ravens had to go and win…
Posted by mindbender99 | February 4, 2013, 11:43 amHa! I can hear you with Jamaican accent now . . . the only thing missing is my umbrella drink and the beach!
Posted by Anka | February 5, 2013, 6:21 pmOh Melissa, I wish I could hear you do that accent. You would be a riot! That was my favorite car commercial. I take it you and hubby listen to Bob Marley?
Posted by Anka | February 5, 2013, 6:23 pmWe are big Bob Marley fans! Our kids have been schooled on Bob Marley since they were infants and can probably tell you most of his songs! I have tried introducing them to classical music as well to even things out a bit but they didn’t take to it as well!! haha!!
Posted by motherhoodisanart | February 5, 2013, 6:49 pmI’m FROM Baltimore and I LIVE in California and I ROOT for the Steelers. Do you have ANY idea how conflicted I felt yesterday?
Posted by Seb | February 4, 2013, 11:59 amYikes! Sounds like you did have a bit of a conflict. You mentioned three different states and there could only be ONE winner. Let’s see how your team fairs next year!
Posted by Anka | February 5, 2013, 6:17 pmShoot, I missed another game.
Ah well. I googled the commercials this morning.
Posted by Chatter Master | February 4, 2013, 2:23 pmHope you enjoyed the Super Bowl commercials, Colleen. I’m glad I watched them on Sunday because I haven’t had a moment to plop down in front of the T.V. since!
Posted by Anka | February 7, 2013, 7:30 pmI’ve enjoyed the ones I got to. Ran out of time on the bike that morning and haven’t had time to go back. But I did see the Budwieser one.
Posted by Chatter Master | February 8, 2013, 2:44 amThankfully, neither my other half or myself care much for professional sports. College football season is another thing! We kinda watched the Super Bowl, but didn’t feel the need to stay up until the end. lol I also didn’t feel the need to vacuum.
Posted by littlemisswordy | February 4, 2013, 4:39 pmMy husband LOVES college ball too. But, I hear ya on not wanting to stay up late to watch the Super Bowl. If I lived in your part of the world, I would’ve called it a night too. Fortunately, neither one of us had the urge to vacuum. Though I did feel like a “hoover vac” after all the junk I ate during the game!
Posted by Anka | February 7, 2013, 7:33 pmthis is so me… except i don’t vacuum, but i do find 100 things to do besides watching the game. except last night. last night, i made a conscious effort to watch (or try watch) and my husband definitely appreciated it. only took 15-20 years.
Posted by icescreammama | February 4, 2013, 4:42 pmI’m sure hubby was thrilled that you made an effort to watch the game with him. It’s like suddenly our men don’t feel so alone when we accompany them. Almost as if they have their own built-in cheerleader. Hope all is well in your neck of the woods!
Posted by Anka | February 10, 2013, 9:56 amI don’t get Super Bowl – or football or any sport really. Luckily for me neither does Mr G. But he does like weird psycho thrillers that I have to sit through with him – do I get a medal for that!?
Posted by Piper George | February 5, 2013, 2:13 pmYou definitely get a medal for watching psycho thrillers with Mr. G. My guy hasn’t asked me to do that yet. If I had to chose between the two, I’d probably pick football. Sitting through a psycho thriller from beginning to end would certainly cause me to have bad dreams. Hope all is well today, Piper!
Posted by Anka | February 10, 2013, 9:49 amI wouldn’t mind the psycho thrillers so much if he didn’t fall asleep half way through, leaving me to jump my way through the rest alone.
Posted by Piper George | February 11, 2013, 3:22 amSounds like you had a great time. I’m not sure I have the patience or capacity to sit through a sports event.
Posted by rynnasaryonnah | February 6, 2013, 6:01 amI was surprised at my ability to sit through three hours of football too! But, in the end, it was so worth it. You never know, you just might find yourself doing the same thing one day. That, or you’ll be persuading your guy to watch video footage of The Doors.
Posted by Anka | February 10, 2013, 9:52 amVery sweet
funny that you typically vacuum lol. I like watching sports but more for the social aspect and I definitely way rather play than watch! I watched it all…the Super Bowl is definitely much more than just football. Loved the doritos commercials too!
Posted by Lilly Sue | February 9, 2013, 7:48 pmThe social aspect of sports is a huge selling point for me too! Super Bowl Sunday is a perfect illustration of all three components: socializing, meets advertising, meets football. It’s the best of worlds, especially if you actually get to eat a few Doritos during the game. Thanks for stopping by Lilly Sue! Have a lovely Sunday!
Posted by Anka | February 10, 2013, 10:00 amHa ha I agree with everything you said! Lol have a great rest of your weekend!
Posted by Lilly Sue | February 10, 2013, 12:31 pmThere are so few mentions of vacuuming on blogs. Thank you so very much. If you are so inclined, you may enjoy this partial bit on vacuuming: http://bobskelley.com/2012/08/29/bring-back-the-vacuuming-test/
Posted by hittingthesweetspot | February 15, 2013, 2:20 pmThanks for the link to your post. It was very entertaining!
